Happy Hangul Day!

October 9th marks the national celebration of the Korean writing system, Hangul! Hangul means “the Great Script” and is a point of pride for the Korean nation. The Korean alphabet is often referred to as the most scientific and systematic writing system because rather than developing and changing over a long period of time, it was created quickly with the goal that each letter would match one sound.

The Creation of Hangul

This year the Korean writing system is turning 570 years old! So how did Koreans write things down before Hangul was invented? For the majority of Korea’s history Chinese characters were used to write. Yet contrary to popular belief, Korean language was not derived from Chinese. Chinese, Korean, and Japanese languages are not related, yet during this time all three languages used the writing system invented by China. It was because the Chinese writing system is not phonetic (meaning you can’t sound out a word or know how to pronounce it just by looking at it), that Korea was able to borrow the symbols for their own language for a long period of time.

Even though this system worked well, in the 1400’s a great king by the name of Sejong realized that the Chinese characters were very difficult for common people to learn. During that time, only the rich had the ability to buy books and study. Without diligent studying, it was almost impossible to become literate. King Sejong the Great had compassion on the common people and wanted them to be able to express themselves in writing. For that reason he set out to create a new writing system that would be easy for all people to learn. King Sejong drew the alphabet so that each letter represented the way the tongue moved in the mouth. His goal was to create an alphabet that could be learned in a day and could provide one letter for one sound (compare this to English: for example, “ph” and “f” can make the same or different sounds). The first book containing instructions on how to learn Hangul was released on October 9th, 1446.

Learning Hangul

Let’s learn how to read Hangul! Follow the link and get yourself acquainted with the Korean alphabet! http://www.ryanestrada.com/learntoreadkoreanin15minutes/

Hangul is an alphabet just like English. There are 10 basic vowels and 14 basic consonants. In English, we write every letter in a row straight across the page. In Korean, however, the letters are stacked into syllable blocks. Each syllable must include at least a consonant and a vowel. If you want to add another consonant to the end, you place it underneath the first two creating a block.

Confused yet? It may seem a little confusing at first because it’s so different from English, but it’s really simple! If you think you got the hang of it, try pronouncing these words:

안녕하세요 – Hello! (or 안녕 informally) [annyeong haseyo]

뭐해? – What’cha doin? [mwo hey?]

친구 – Friend [chingu]

선생님 – Teacher [sunsaengneem]

사랑해 – I love you [saranghey]

My Experience Learning Korean

Learning Korean has been such a joy for me. I became interested in learning Korean my junior year of high school and decided to self-teach myself a bit. At first, learning was very difficult because Korean is so different from English and I didn’t have a teacher to explain! However, I found Korean so interesting that I kept trying and eventually started taking classes at my college. As I learned more, I became even more interested! Korean is very, very different than English – this makes it difficult but also very fascinating to learn. I’m thankful I studied before I came to Korea because now I can read and write quickly as well as have small conversations in Korean!

This Week’s Response

This week, I’d like to hear your thoughts about language and language learning! Please leave a comment on this post and consider these questions:

  • Do you know a second language or have you tried learning one? If you do know a second language, are you comfortable using it?
  • Have you ever been in a situation where it was difficult to communicate with someone because of a language barrier? How did you feel?
  • What are the pros and cons of learning more that one language? Do you think that people should learn more than one language? Why?

As always, if you had any interesting thoughts while you were reading this post or if you have any questions, feel free to include those in your comments! Have a lovely week everyone!

Hey! I love your new post and I have been trying to learn German. I think it would be a barrier if you did not understand what others are saying around you. First of all you would not understand what they are trying to say or explain to you. Secondly it would be a real struggle if you are not able see their sign of a historic place or thing. Keep on writing!

Hello! English isn’t my first language, and I’m working on learning French. There a great program at our school to bring us into learning it. No homework or tests too, so it’s really fun. I haven’t really been in a situation where language was a problem, but it seems difficult to be in. I feel like people should learn a second (or more) language because it opens you to so many more opportunities than you would have if you on,y learned one. Its a great thing to do if you ever want to travel to other places that may not speak your language as well. Thank you, I’ll talk to you again.

    Hello
I’m actually taking a Spanish class right now. I’m learning so much! I never have really been in a situation like that, unless it counts as my friends parents talking in Korean. But sometimes it frustrates me when I don’t understand them or vice versa. The pros and cons of learning a new language is that it helps your mind keep in shape. You also can understand people speaking that language. A con might be that you have to put in a lot of time and energy learning thus new language.
Are there any different ceremonies coming up while you are in Korea?

I have been in a situation with a language barrier, when i went to a restaurant and they spoke only Spanish. It was very difficult to tell them what I wanted. But through a lot of signing and pointing we ordered. I think it is a great idea to learn another Language. I would help you understand your language better and the culture of the language you are learning. Thank you so much for this wonderful post. I really learned a lot.

Hello! I am actually learning French right now and I started taking French classes last year. I haven’t actually been in a situation where there was a language barrier but I did use to have a Spanish friend and when I went to her house her family spoke Spanish and I had no idea what they were saying. I think that there are a lot of pros to learning a new language, so that you can speak to more people and can comfortably go to different countries. Escpecially because a lot of countries in the rest of the world learn English and also speak their language while a bunch of people in the U.S. only speak English.

    Like

    1. I completely agree Fiona! In many other countries, students learn multiple languages but in the US we usually only learn one and we aren’t required to take many language classes! I think that maybe it would make Americans much more open to other cultures if we were to learn many languages.

Hey! It’s Meilin. I am learning Spanish right now at school! I think if you have the opportunity to learn another language you definitely should. Learning new languages sometimes even helps you understand English better, you understand why certain words are what they are and how it originates. I have tried talking to my Spanish teacher, and not been able to catch up to what she was saying. It’s frustrating, but you learn to be more observant and notice their facial exprecions or hand movements.

There are many positive sides of learning more than one language. First, you can communicate with many other people that speak a different language. This will help you get along with people, and could help you get a job. Learning more than one language is also very good for your brain, and will help you understand your native language better. There are not many downsides to it, but one is that it is very hard to learn a new language. Clearly, there are many positive reasons why you should learn a new language.

I grew up in San Antonio going to a bi-language school from prek to 4th grade so I have have been able to speak Spanish fluently for most of my life. However when I moved to Oregon about three years ago I forgot most of it because I didnt practice it. I can still understand it but I can only speak in small-talk.

My grandparents have Spanish as their first language and English as their second so I used to speak to them in Spanish. Now when I talk to them over the phone I have to speak to them in English and it’s harder to keep a conversation going.

It’s really nice to know another language because you can speak easily to a lot more people but it is hard to keep up and unless you speak it everyday you can forget it pretty quickly.

Another pro is you could be a translator and you could travel on a really rich persons plane. Talk to you later!

My first language is English. My parents and all my family talk Spanish. I could kind of hold a conversation in Spanish but it is sometimes hard because I forget a lot of the words. Sometimes when my aunts visit our house I could sometimes not understand some of the words, and when I speak to them I stumble over my words a lot. It is a bit embarrassing because I am Hispanic but I am not very good at Spanish. I think that it is good to learn a second language because I have read that it helps you learn other things better.

Hi! I am currently learning French, because I’ve always wanted to travel to France. No one in my family speaks French but we have friends that are from France and they speak it fluently.
The situations where there was a language barrier usually includes nail salons and Mexican restaurants, but there’s this one time where my new science partner was from Asia, I forget which country. Whenever we did activities it was difficult and I felt very helpless and confused. He eventually knew enough English so that we could communicate in small talk.
There are a lot of pros in learning a new language such as getting to travel to different places, communicating with someone from a completely different culture and helping foreigners. But there’re also cons such as starting at an older age because it is easier to pick up when you are younger. But other than that there are barely any cons.
I think that everyone should try and learn a new language because it’s very fun and spreads diversity.

I’ve only been taking the class since the beginning of this year, so I don’t know a lot, but I hope I will eventually. I went to Hawaii one summer, and a lot of people on buses and in restaurants spoke Japanese, but it was easy enough to gesture and things like that. I’ve never been out of the country though, so I’ve never been places where everyone around me speaks some other language. The reason why I’m learning another language is because I like to see how different languages connect, specifically those all based off of Latin. It’s also important to learn another language because it can help you understand your own language better.

I have had the privilege of being able to visit China many times through my life and it is difficult to have an intelligent conversation with someone because of how fast they talk. Communication with others who don’t speak your language is very important because it makes others who have a language barrier feel included. When I has in elementary school I got the choice to learn Spanish. I chose not to so I could do more after school activitys but know I am kinda regretting that decision. There have been several situations in which the person I am trying to talk to speaks a different language and to be honest, I feel bad because i don’t want to be rude and leave the conversation but on the other hand I have no clue what they are saying so I just smile and nod my head. I think it would be great to learn a second language first, so that there might be less One sided conversations and second if there is someone who is alone because no one else speaks their language you can go talk to them.

I know how to speak English and Chinese. In fact I went to China over the summer with my dad to visit my relatives! I did not have language barriers when I was in China since I know how to speak it. I think people should learn more than one language so they could speak two languages which would be awesome, in my opinion. A lot of people in the USA could only speak Spanish fluently, so learning a language would be great. But if you need to learn languages, it will take a lot of work! Do you know how to speak Korean? And speaking of language barriers, did the flight attendants on the plane know English?

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Harry! I do know how to speak a little Korean but there is definitely still a language barrier! The flight attendants spoke English pretty well actually!
